Description
Join the American Ladino League for an in-depth conversation about writing award-winning literature in dialogue with Ladino and Sephardic culture. Jane Mushabac will speak about two of her works: Mazal Bueno: A Portrait in Song of the Spanish Jews as well as His Hundred Years, A Tale. Last month, an audience of 250 people gave a standing ovation to a revival performance of Jane's Mazal Bueno at New York Ladino Day in Manhattan. What the crowd had just heard was the hour-long radio play that she wrote on commission for NPR, performed by Broadway star Julie Benko and with all Ladino songs performed by the Grammy-nominated Western Wind Vocal Ensemble. She originally wrote the play for NPR in 1992, on the 500th anniversary of the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain. Jane spearheaded the first New York Ladino Day at the Center for Jewish History in 2018, and she and Bryan Kirschen currently co-curate NY Ladino Day together. Jane's many awards include fellowships from the NEH and Mellon Foundation and a 2024 Pushcart Prize nomination for a Ladino short story that she wrote and translated into English. Her 2016 novel His Hundred Years, A Tale has won praise in the fields of Sephardic and American literature and won an international prize for fiction. Jane has taught English literature and Creative Writing at a campus of the City University of New York, and is now Professor Emerita. ALL Authors is a public program that engages with authors and creators who work with Ladino in the American cultural sphere. The conversations are held in English with Ladino references throughout. This free Zoom event will last 75 minutes and will include time for Q&A with the author as well as on-air book giveaways and prizes.
