JCLP Small Congregations session - Rabbi Jonathan Porath
Rabbi Jonathan Porath, originally from the US and living in Jerusalem for the past 40 years, has been deeply involved in Jewish life in the Soviet Union and Former Soviet Union for the past half-a-century, since his first visit to Russia in 1965, through 2019. He was on the Senior Staff of the American Joint Distribution Committee'S Russia Department for 15 years and knows the Jews of Russia, the Ukraine and other republics intimately.
His recently published and critically acclaimed book Here We Are All Jews--175 Russian-Jewish Journeys [Gefen Publishing, available on Amazon] tells the story of this remarkable Jewish world from which so many of us come originally.
Of special interest to us, he will focus on "Jewish Life in the Peripheries', both in the Former Soviet Union and in our own communities as well. What makes for a community spirit? What binds us together? What challenges do we face? What do we all share together around the world [regardless if we speak English with a Midwestern accent or Russian or Ukrainian].
He will also offer insights on the current situation for Russian and Ukrainian Jews, including the departure of Russia's Chief Rabbi and the war in Ukraine.

Rabbi Porath will provide a unique perspective that may shed light on our own experiences of living in small Jewish communities.
