Tobacco, Vaping, & Cannabis: Implications for Patients

This didactic session will help prepare dental professionals to address the rapidly changing products and patterns of tobacco and other substance use among their patients. The dental team is likely to encounter patients who use or have questions about alternative tobacco products, like electronic cigarettes (vaping), and other substances, like cannabis (marijuana). The potential influence of vaping on population health is intensely debated: e-cigarettes could represent a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes but may increase youth nicotine use and are not harm-free. Dental professionals must understand the oral health effects and overall health implications of cigarettes, non-cigarette tobacco, and other substances to provide proper patient treatment and counseling.
