WE ACT Extreme Heat Webinar
WE ACT for Environmental Justice is a Northern Manhattan community-based organization whose mission is to build healthy communities by assuring that people of color and/or low-income participate meaningfully in the creation of sound and fair environmental health and protection policies and practices.

Through our Heat, Health, and Equity Initiative, WE ACT is finding solutions to extreme heat and the forces of inequity that make the heat more dangerous for our community. In the short-term, we are working to make sure our community is aware of the impact of extreme heat, what benefits and programs are currently available, and how to access them. We are also working to advance a variety of strategies to promote a comprehensive portfolio of approaches that emphasizes social equity and prioritizes community participation.

During this webinar WE ACT will be unveiling our 2022 Heat Plan that includes policy and strategy recommendations to proactively prepare NYC for rising temperatures and mitigate the corresponding health risks. And we will also be presenting findings from our 2021 Cooling Center Report – reporting the results of surveys done on Northern Manhattan cooling centers.

This webinar will feature discussions on:
-understanding extreme heat through the lens of environmental racism and environmental and climate justice;
-causes and impacts of extreme heat;
-solutions and action that can be taken to mitigate the effects of extreme heat;
-ways to foster collaboration among stakeholders and promote accountability from city agencies and elected officials.
