Correctional Officer Understaffing: Barriers to Creating Constitutionally Adequate Prisons and Jails
Nearly every prison and jail system in the U.S. faces the problem of correctional officer understaffing, leading to more violence and heavier reliance on solitary confinement and other restrictive practices. Understaffing also limits prisoner access to medical and mental health services, educational opportunities and outdoor recreation. Understaffing issues persist even after securing successful settlements in prison or jail litigation, and cannot be readily addressed through Eighth Amendment litigation. This webinar will explore the problem of prison understaffing and invite participants to consider options for addressing this growing problem.
