Thoughtful virtual discussion of "Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America", the 2021 Pulitzer Prize winning book by Marcia Chatelain. which takes us on the struggle for racial justice through the lens of the complicated, multi-faceted, and surprising relationships of fast food franchises with communities from Southern California in the 1940's, to Ferguson, MO, in 2014, allowing wealth-building and youth employment, but having other impacts as well. Also winner of the 2020 Hooks National Book Award, the 2021 Hagley Prize, the 2021 Lawrence Levine Award, Smithsonian Scholars Top Books of 2020, and a NY Times Best Books of 2020.
