The Dominance Controversy – explained by veterinary behavior resident Dr. Meaghan Ropski
Dominance, a theory based on a flawed study of wolf pack behavior, has been applied to the relationship between humans and our domestic dogs. It describes interactions of force and submission to determine access to resources. This outdated theory can be detrimental to our dogs’ learning, our relationship with our dogs, and the safety of both us and our pets. Fortunately, though, there are alternatives – whether teaching skills, preventing behavior issues, or dealing with problems that already exist.
