Centennial Park Was A "White Park" Until 1956: Race Relations in Jim Crow Nashville
The November 5th meeting of AAHGS Nashville will feature Historian David Ewing on the definitive role that black leaders such as J.C. Napier and Preston Taylor had in pushing for a significant Negro presence at the1897 Tennessee Exposition, held in Nashville, at the location we now know as Centennial Park. The famous "Negro Building," showcasting black achievement in business and industry, was a major attraction at the Exposition.

However, an old Tenneseean newspaper article from the period, recently discovered by fellow AAHGS Nashville member Karen Edwards, puts the grandiose Negro showcase to shame. This puts the whole historic Exposition and its highly regarded Negro Building into a whole new perspective!
