Picture a Scientist Film Discussion

Join educators across the state for a one-hour discussion of the film, Picture a Scientist. Watch the film at your leisure, then, on March 1, join a facilitated conversation with Mt Hood Community College member Lori Wamsley. Access to the film will be provided via email after your OEA membership is confirmed.

About the film: Women make up less than a quarter of STEM professionals in the United States, and numbers are even lower for women of color. But a growing group of researchers is exposing longstanding discrimination and making science more inclusive. Picture a Scientist chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
