In this workshop, participants will learn a brief history of how the (mis)use of printing technologies may allow us to understand the role and form of the book. Using examples of receipts published through betweenthehighway press, I will share the production difficulties and limitations of receipt printing as well as how I overcame those difficulties and limitations. Additionally, I will discuss further possibilities for receipt printing, reviewing receipt/label machines, printing material, and alternative approaches to production.
Participants can expect to learn about the history of alternative publishing, current examples of publishers using receipts, how to start producing books on receipt paper, and how receipt printing may be integrated into their work. At the end of the workshop, participants can experiment with a PoS word processor, P-touch, and have it published as a free zine through betweenthehighway press.
