Wellness Wednesday: Dairy - Not All It's Milked to Be
Ever since we were kids, we have been told that cow’s milk is nature’s perfect food, essential for strong bones. What if that wasn’t true? Having grown up in the DC area with a father and step-father who worked for the federal government, Mindy naturally trusted the government’s advice. Then she learned the truth about dairy when she gained access to government documents while working at the Physicians Committee. Join us for this discussion about the mostly unspoken harms of the dairy industry–to our health, to the animals, and to the environment-and judge for yourself whether it’s time to kick dairy to the curb.

Speaker: Mindy Kursban, Esq., Board Chair, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

Mindy is a lawyer, vegan advocate, and lover of food.
She wants to live in a world where chocolate chip cookies are considered a health food, refrigerators double as personal chefs, and chickens can be chickens, not food.

Becoming vegetarian in 1992 out of her compassion for animals, Mindy was grateful to subsequently learn that eating a plant-based diet is not only good for animals, but is also optimal for her health and the environment. Her switch to veganism in 1999 was coupled with becoming the in-house attorney for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit health advocacy group based in Washington DC that focuses on prevention and compassion in medicine. Her first assignment was to sue the US Department of Agriculture for establishing a Committee tasked with updating the Dietary Guidelines for Americans whose members were riddled with financial links to the meat, dairy and egg industries. Thereafter, she filed several more lawsuits and petitions against the federal government and multi-national corporations like Kraft and Tysons demanding changes in nutritional policy and truthfulness in marketing. Today, Mindy is the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Physicians Committee.
