What’s the source of the statistic about children only learning a small amount of vocabulary through reading alone, as opposed to through explicit teaching?

R.Dwyer
01:25:25
Lots of context for children to hook onto. They were really engaged!
Juli Ryzop
01:26:15
Activating prior knowledge/learning at the start. Explicit instruction of new words with child-friendly definitions. Lots of opportunity for orally rehearsing the key words and using actions to help the words stick. Consistent approach utilising the word raps
N Hassan
01:27:40
use of language/ vocabulary was modelled effectively by activating prior knowledge. Great use of purposeful talk and high level of engagement.
Juli Ryzop
01:27:50
Really embedding the knowledge of word classes (constantly identifying whether the word was a noun, adjective, verb, adverb)
R.Dwyer
01:30:25
Can see how second lesson really links with spelling and grammar so children understand the rules and uses of words we're asking them to spell
Kelly Duffin
01:35:29
Please can I ask how many words are suggested to teach per day? My teachers do 2 a week currently - is this not enough?
Kelly Duffin
01:36:47
Thank you!

We have just purchased ELS and the supporting decodable books but also have a wide array of other books from different publishers. Any advice as to how to tackle the massive task of sorting them out?

Still here
Jenny Davis - Ealing
07:18:02
We use an inference training programme with our pupils - all have diagnosis of autism as they do not generalise these strategies and skills without explicit teaching
Miss Layton
07:22:03
So much to take in. Chris’ book is in my Amazon basket too now.
Miss Layton
07:23:46
Love the idea of repeated decoding practice and reading aloud in Y2/3. Definitely will look to integrate this.
Kelly
07:24:11
We saw you put up a list of year 6 texts for shared exploration - could you tell us about this and where we might find something like this for each year group?
Najat Hassan
07:24:19
An excellent session, I feel so informed. What would you consider ad the key elements of a successful reading lesson? What should we ensure to include when teaching a rich text?
Miss Layton
07:25:10
Suggestions for short texts always welcome. Staff find it so difficult selecting a years worth of texts and I find it hard suggesting enough.
Jenny Davis - Ealing
07:26:12
Thank you so much - very interesting talk - I will check out your website and blog
Miss Layton
07:26:36
We did minimal SATs prep this year and only spent a few weeks looking at papers. So much better for everyone’s mental health and how much the children enjoy reading lessons.

Thank you so much-very interesting!
