Odd question my wife always says she needs her feelings "validated", what does that term validated mean? Just acknowledging your going thru something, is that validation? Thanks for any answers

57:28
How do I validate parents in regards to attendance I guess was the long and short of that ?

57:48
Carlos--I love that question. To be validated is to be acknowledged. So not necessary solved for--but recognized as legitimate.

58:00
It also helps the teachers/staff understand where the student is coming from.

58:30
Will this recording be shared?

58:37
From an attendance perspective, Carlos, I think it goes a long way to acknowledge that barriers to attendance really exist and normally when children aren't coming, it isn't just because it's not important to the family.

58:52
SO.... attendance wise when a parent says XYZ, even if I don't feel its legit or real or whatever I should "validate" or acknowledge them or there feelings?

58:55
should the slides be updated?

59:16
Can you repeat the name of this app?

59:46
What is the app/translation program and how many languages does it cover?

59:48
Our school uses Class Dojo and it can also translate.

59:50
Our county loves it as well.

01:00:03

01:00:23
I try to be sensitive and communicate and blah blah blah, however I feel something different then home visits is needed. I am not allowed to go pick kids up otherwise I would, that would be so much $ reimbursed haha:) and the kids would get to school, everyone wins

01:00:53
Our program uses Class Dojo which has worked great for communication with staff and family and once you register, you can register with your home language so will receive the message that way.

01:00:55
Ok NOW I am understanding what validating means, thanks so much new fam haha

01:01:07
My school uses ClassDojo & also I worked with my teachers to use the translator on their phone

01:01:27
We use PikMyKid which was kind of IDK soso

01:01:29
We'll post the recording of this webinar in 72 hours https://www.attendanceworks.org/resources/webinars/

01:01:34
We use class Dojo

01:02:10
We sure parent square

01:02:21
However instead of 'but' is a little better IMO

01:02:43
We call it in Spanish "The Personalismo Approach"

01:02:44
Human Business Human Model got it

01:03:25
When I was in schools, I tried to use "and"...the student pays attention in class, and I want to let you know that it's concerning to me when she isn't attending

01:04:06
Love that "give them the pickle!" attitude

01:04:08
I appreciate Principal Amey's Human Model approach. We also understand the value in making every parent as well as our staff and community member feel important. Everyone has valued and should be treated as such.

01:04:20
@Carley and @Karen, sounds great!

01:04:22
We had "the pickle" as a reward at a ski resort I worked at for the department that got the highest customer service ratings that week

01:04:39
Charles, I love all you are doing for your school. Would you be able to share the great resources you are talking about, so we can use at our districts. Thank you!

01:05:06
@Delores - keep this up!

01:05:07
I like this as well.

01:05:28
Yes. !!! I appreciate his comment about customer service and how the front office sets the tone of the school You know if a school is welcoming and warm the minute you walk in the front office. But teachers, staff and everyone need that attitude and servant's heart for leading students to success.

01:05:46
Thank you so much that was AWESOME!š

01:05:49
Treating our students, families, and the community as "customers" is SO important! IMO it seems to get lost between the local school site and the district level.

01:06:04
Very helpful - thank you!

01:06:12
SERVICE MINDED FIRST AND FOREMOST - absolutely!!!!

01:06:47
Thank you Charles. The servant mindset is truly crucial to creating a welcoming and sustainable environment

01:07:32
Excellent tips Charles! So important to meet people where they are without judgment.

01:07:56
I know for a fact our school is safer than 75 percent of the home I visit as the attendance specialist. I hate to say that but its just true. We don't even have a SRO, we share the SRO we get him 1 day a week.

I always make sure when shootings happen in our kids neighborhoods which is pretty much daily, that I note and mark where it happens and try to discuss with parents the issues involving where they live.

01:09:13
I have even tried to assist some families with finding new places to live even if it means they leave our school

01:11:16
Bringing SNAP-Ed into the classroom to do Nutrition in the Classroom is another way to increase their knowledge of nutrition, but encourage them to make the healthy choices. Then holding workshops for the parents reinforce what the youth are learning.

01:14:55
Will you also address how we help parents understand the impact of chronic absenteeism om student achievement and learning loss, the importance of developing these attendance habits starting TK & Kindergarten?

because teaching is more than just showing them material., but actually being an open heart to students from all backgrounds

01:28:42
You are an awesome leader Principal Amey .

01:28:55
Go in the hall when the bell rings or before school. Look at teacher's faces, and kids faces. It is so insightful to see. Are we a happy school or not? Who set's the tone? Who set's the tone in the classroom. I like the idea of decompressing and visiting with staff, because we as adults know you have to leave all that at the door, and set a positive tone. Hard to do. Great ideas and passion

01:29:42

01:30:35
phenomenal community involvement

01:30:44
School nurses (and nursing assistants) are employed in our district by the health department. We really need more from them in terms of getting immunization clinics in schools to ensure that kids without all their required immuizations are not excluded from school. Also - some need that customer service training. Friendly and firm, but not mean or shaming.

What data dashboard software platform is that featured in the slide?

01:33:34
I am a community vocational case manager that works for a non-profit. All of my clients have severe attendance issues and usually IEP's and socio-economic barriers. What is the best way for me to collaborate with school staff and educators to work as a team and support students?

01:34:22
How would you define chronic absenteeism AND how can you differentiate between whether it's related to Covid or something else?

01:34:32
I believe it was "Talking Points"

01:34:33
What is it called? Power ?

01:34:39
Lisa, is that database included with Microsoft Edge package or does it need to be purchased separately?

01:34:57
What is the dashboard program called?

01:35:04
There was so much mis-conveyance of data during virtual learning. Students might show up during "homeroom", but not the rest of the day. So, was the student really present?

Students attendance data needs to be connected with their academic progress. Then a plan needs to be made to target students in need who need to academic, socio-emotional support and personal/motivational connections that can motivate students to attends. For example, students struggling can meet with an adult mentor and advocate to co-plan a pathway forward. What does the school have --clubs, enrichment opportunities, experiences can we connect students to --to increase engagement in school and, thus, impact attendance.

Especially elementary students who are not responsible for their attendance in school.

01:52:22
so tough to leave this invaluable webinar; will look for recording. thanks for everyones' contributions.

01:52:25
Elementary attendance is often a signal of a family situation; secondary attendance can be a signal of the child's situation.

01:52:58
I realized working with my Pre-3 & 4 children on their level, working with the adults / families in their lives in the same way, I for the most part achieve the best outcome for them. Being if it's attendance & or other challenges they are facing.

01:53:28
Exactly. I work with elementary students. Iāve had students who don't come to school because they don't have clean clothes.

01:55:13
Thank you. This webinar was great and very helpful.

Our school systems suffer from the fact that the starting point that attendance and curricula are mandatory and success is officially measured by course grades and tests. While Charles and Lisa and many school staff work hard to get beyond this, the fact that our "early warning system" is attendance (chronic absenteeism), behavior (disruptive) and course failure is a signal that we have a long way to go to create system-level supports to affirm staff, family and community commitments to bigger ABC goals - attachment, belonging, competency based contributions.

01:56:33
Thank you Lots of ! nuggets! A great school year to all!

01:56:57
THANK YOU! AWESOME!

As an attendance officer, my secret weapon is a trunk full of alarm clocks, sweat pants, toothbrushes, school supplies. The practical small items offered in support of a student really can open up doors (I give 50 or so alarm clocks a year to students who want them to work around the smart phone alarm trap by the bed.)

01:57:37
Thank you so much for this meeting. I really appreciated all the perspectives and comments!
