I see this as especially related to hiring practices for faculty and postdocs

01:00:48
Maybe a teaching perspective: there was a year when I realized that all of my examples in introductory courses were gendered and had to rewrite them all. In particular examples that say “25% of women and 65% of men” or similar.

01:01:48

I was hoping you would help us!

02:13:43
Talking, speaking up is better than silence and letting things fester.

02:17:05
Case study #2: You are part of the committee that is looking through applications for graduate student admissions. Each committee member is tasked with presenting their top 5 candidates at the meeting. When you introduce yours, another committee member says, “You are suggesting we admit Ruchi because she brings diversity to the program, but I am not sure she will be a good fit mathematically.” When you ask for clarification, your colleague says, “Well, she didn’t go through a very good undergraduate program, and she doesn’t know the right people.” Another committee member, Susan, jumps in and says, “Well, Richard, I think you are being racist.” Richard takes great offense and demands Susan leave the meeting.

02:20:04
Racism is a serious charge. People think it is closes discussions, instead of opens up discussions. I wouldn't bring it up in a group but may want to discuss it privately.

02:20:36
I like your suggestion by asking for the data to back up the conclusion.

02:22:26
But that also puts the person on the spot. I put down in our group strategy about re-iterating the criteria/rubric that is used for selection process.
