kelly, i am back in. can you assign me again to spanish? thank you

01:59:40
Excellent point Jurgen!

02:02:03
I am Loupa Pius, sorry I joined Late. Can grasslands receive equal policy support like the forests. Suppose Payment for ecosystem services. Just thinking about it. Cheers.

02:02:54
Good and productivity ideia Loupa!

02:03:43
An additional threat to the grassland conversion Barry mentioned is the wetland drainage associated with the land use change.

02:03:49
Hello Loupa. We now know that rangelands are 54% (or more) of the earth’s land surface. Surely they should be receiving equal if not more policy support !

02:04:01
however, normally the grassland is exclude of the PES..as far as I know...

02:05:26
Grasslands don’t make it into PES well because it is assumed that they don’t sequester carbon. We need to change that perception and improve the methodologies for calculating carbon in rangelands - as stated by Ian Scoones in the Symposium on Tuesday and in the PASTRES report that was launched at COP 26.

02:05:38
That would be difficult to determine for Canada, as most of the forest is on public land. So, in that sense grasslands on public land receive a similar level of support and protection. Forest on private land in Canada currently would receive minimal public support for their maintenance. Grasslands are receiving a bit of support through a trial program (to prevent cultivation). Short story is grassland and forest receive similar support, which is not much, especially on private land, to deter land conversion.

02:08:04
Thanks all for that adequate feedback.

02:08:08
Indeed rangeland conversion is one of the biggest threats worldwide. According to the Rangeland Atlas, rangeland area has been reduced by half compared to historical levels.

02:11:04
he can speak in french, the interpreters just need to change channel as I do when the spanish speakers presents

02:12:21
Thanks Harouna. How is the interaction between Great Green wall with pastoral economic, environmental and social effects. When you look at women pastoralists participation. I may need to know more from the gender perspective. What do you think is most critical when it comes to Great Green Wall plan. Thanks

02:18:48

02:22:47
Thanks Igshaan. I have no info to share.

02:23:30
But I will respond to any questions incase.

02:27:45
Land conversion of native grassland to cultivation is continual and insidious. Grasslands in the mesic end (transitions to forest) do not recover well once they have been cultivated. In North America, dry grasslands seem to recover, albeit after many years. Mesic grasslands do not, because even after putting them back into perennial cover, it is not back to native grassland. Once mesic native grasslands are cultivated, they are unlikely to ever return to native grassland.

02:31:21
the Borana pastoralist in southern Ethiopia have enclosure system called "Kallo" that is mainly used for dry season grazing and reserved for lactaging animals. The system has been challanged by crop expansion and land grabbing. The new recognition and certification of communal rangland may improve the protection of the rangelands. tezera

02:34:44
Some land uses can be combined, e.g. pastoralism and conservation or pastoralism and large-scale generation of renewable energy, if these are planned together with the pastoralists and they receive fair benefits.

02:37:23
This was a big topic at our campfire session- shifting the perspective so people can see the value of rangelands
