01:09:09
My confusion: This begins Saturday 07/16/2022. Is this across the country, or are there different implementation times for different states, and perhaps for different counties? Asked from a very rural, isolated county - California North Coast. We have no NAMI here, nor in Curry County, OR, our neighbor to the north. How do I find out how this will change in my community or the communities for our clients? Thank you.

how can we get this number out to our veterans and current service folks who are so much in need
*Stephanie Pasternak
01:18:31
July 16th, 2022 is the date that the 9-8-8 will be made available by all phone providers nationwide (Verizon, T-Mobile, ATT, etc. and local phone companies). On July 16th, anyone can reach out to 988 and be connected to a crisis counselor. The availability of in-person crisis services will vary based on your location. To learn what resources and services are connected with 988 in your community, I'd recommend contacting your local department of behavioral health, state mental health authority or department of human services. You can also reach out proactively to your local crisis call center that is part of the 988 Lifeline network to ask them about what resources are available.

988 will not replace the lifeline number. The lifeline number 1-800-273-8255 will still be in place.
Roxanne Chaney
01:36:34
When you are in crisis, it is easier to remember 3 digits.
Paul Darbouze
01:37:36
988 is easy to remember, people will most likely call 988.
Suzanne Bancale
01:39:13
does anyone have a social media announcement jpg?
*Jessica Hart, NAMI
01:39:20
SAMHSA has a great FAQ section on 988: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/988/faqs988 will get you to the Lifeline and the 1-800-273-8255 lifeline number will still be available as it is printed on many materials.
Trish Cottrell
01:39:50
For clarity. Let's say I, an adult with a diagnosis, am in crisis. I dial 988 in Crescent City California. A trained crisis counselor answers and may be anywhere in the United States, yes? They discern from where I am calling (will this occur automatically, or can someone call from a type of phone that does not publish its location?), they transfer me to my local Behavioral Health? Or.... I dial 988 in Crescent City and a trained crisis counselor in Crescent City answers the phone?
Roxanne Chaney
01:40:37
SAMHSA has a 988 toolkit.
Debra Johnson
01:40:46
It is not just that it is easier to remember, the brain does not function in the frontal lobe during crisis as most here today understand. 988 will likely receive traffic meant for the lifeline as a result. Will transferring callers be possible?
Paige Thomas, MSW - NASMHPD
01:40:47

01:41:36
Solely out of curiosity - is there a significance to the declaration of 988 versus other 3-digit numbers? Just wondering if there was a process to defining this number. Thanks for all of your time and information!

Will 988 be available in different languages? ASL? Spanish? etc.
Priscilla Serna
01:45:22

01:45:56
SAMHSA has a helpful FAQ about 988 here: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/988/faqs
*Jessica Hart, NAMI
01:46:15
The LifeLine also has a great FAQ https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/faq/
*Chris Bouneff, NAMI Oregon
01:46:49
The suicide hotline remains, but over time people will access it by calling 988. This expands the role of the call center because they have to triage and serve a wider array of callers. It's a challenge, but Lines for Life for one has been good about preparing for this expanded role. I believe the vets line will remain, too, but it can also be accessed via 988, is my understanding.
Melvin Niles
01:46:52
