Is the obit on our website?
I’ve known James nearly my entire life and so appreciate this tribute to him
He was best friend to dr abernathy and a bright light I will miss terribly
1921 Walnut Street has already been demoliste.
Interesting that it was demolished during the holiday break
It happened before the break, I believe early December.
Ok. It happened quickly
There is a link to James Peterson's obituary at berkeleyneighborhoodscouncil.com

Regional Housing Needs Assessment
ABAG is the group that takes the state number and allocates among municipalities and counties
RNHA - Regional Housing Needs Allocation
January 27th 6:00 p.m.-Housing Element Community Workshop #2
How do dormitories get counted towards 9000 “units”: if 10-15 students share one single kitchen in a dorm, does it count as a single unit? It seems like # of bedrooms, or #s of residents should be some consideration of counting towards our # goal.
What’s counted: a house, an apartment, a group of rooms, or a single occupied as a separate living quarter
What is not counted - student dores, hospital beds, short-termo hotels/motels
Agree with Paola. Group living GLA’s are counted. Dorms are not. Apparently though the Mayor and staff have been talking with State Housing about allowing dorms to be counted.
A unit is defined in the zoning code, briefly as housing a household. In Berkeley GLAS group living like dorms are not regulated by set standards mostly because UC can do whatever they like and not abide by city zoning. Also, efficiency units are not adequately defined in our city standards. These absent standards need to be corrected
Jesse seeks higher office. Who will support/vote in his direction? ..
Here is a city powerpoint presented to the Rent Board in November - it explains the Housing Element - https://www.cityofberkeley.info/uploadedFiles/Rent_Stabilization_Board/Level_3_-_General/SPECIAL_Item%207_Rent%20Board_Housing%20Elemen
I voted to preserve it when I sat on the LPC ..
Stretches of 1/2-story rows of properties on San Pablo (below Dwight) have been bought up, and await a new fate ..
We are short affordable housing. There’s plenty of market rate housing around.
Thanks, Toni, for the points on establishing standards for SROs and GLAs.
Agreed. We need more affordable units. Of the 9K, if the majority were affordable, it would be a different discussion. The Ashby BART project will likely be the largest pool of affordable units.
When were those state figures on population projections determined? Isn't the state losing people and businesses? ..
You are right David. ALL of these additional 9K units SHOULD be affordable at all levels of AMI. I am working on a project to see how we can pay for it. Utilizing profit revenues from all of the businesses in the Bay Area. Funding is the key to building affordable housing and right now it doesn’t existl
We need to support a vacancy tax measure to provide the city with funds to build affordable housing.
Thanks. Jaq. Financing the affordable units will be key. Imagine if Bay Area businesses had to pay into an affordable housing fund to house their employees. For example, imagine if Google, FB, etc had to fund affordable housing.
Here is an article on financing from Berkeleyside that seems not to be avaialble now? https://www.berkeleyside.org/2022/01/07/berkeleys-historic-microbond-program-offers-novel-quick-financing
Not that the tech company employees need affordable housing, but they should pay into a fund to house those people who cannot afford current rent levels
Who is Greg?
Mine was 'no' across the board. Eh ..
Under COVID, public locations are not being as widely utilized. How is the community being consulted given that additional need to reach out for community input?
Unfortunately all public outreach is currently via Zoom
Would a mailing be effective? Will Berkeleyside be advised to run an article to encourage input?
CA YIMBY in an attempt to block objective standards blames zoning when it’s really discriminatory real estate practices, then and now, that are responsible for blocking minorities from owning homes. For the present time, see this excellent article in Bloombery Business Wee, “Realtors are Sorry About All that Discrimination. The National Association of Realtors wants to make amends. As long as it doesn’t have to talk about that 6% Commission.”
Paola, Greg Magofna ran for D4 in 2018, along with Ben Gould and Kate Harrison.
Anything 'Greg' is bad news; he's the new Eric Tanzer ..
Does that mean that D-1 is open to 'better' representation, or might one of Rashi's followers be given her seat? ..
Looks like Virginia to me.
The problem is in creating formal boundaries to felt areas, aka neighborhoods. If each neighborhood were contained within a greensward, things would be clearer. Then all we'd have is the separation issue ..
I found what I needed on Monday’s agenda.
I e-mailed thee powerpoint to Meryl.
In the meeting, the developer said that people could stay there as long as they want. If they begin to work, they will be asked to pay for their housing at a particular rate.
We can put it on the website for BNC
There will be a small kind of kitchenette in each room and a larger communal kitchen
There could be more than one resident in each room.
Albany closed the Bulb; they should be last ..
CES does centralized placement for shelter/housing.
We would agree that this was a very poorly communicated process thus far. We live literally 20-feet from the Golden Bear and found out about the project via Berkeleyside. We are pro supportive housing, and are compiling our questions as well. That said we find the looseness of the approach unsettling. Very few of our immediate neighbors on 10th Street have any knowledge of the proposal. Seems to have prized speed rather than planning and communication.
Again. The City Berkeley wasting funds to rehab the Unrehabable
Mark, that is a very damning comment about all persons experiencing homelessness. Do you live they are doing better on the streets and that that is better for the general community?
It's a lovely building now! Leave it and emphasize 'move-up' to more permanent quarters once re-acquaintance to proper living is achieved ..
These are for the most part people established in their behaviors. Sad but true. Funds should be used to better understand the roots
If everything goes as planned, the current projected date of opening is June.
Thanks Amy. Great presentation.
Yes, PLEASE contact your Council representative with questions, and request for transparency
I do not trust my council representative ..

There are many housing projects in the works to house the homeless. In addition to Berkeley Way about to open and supportive housing at People’s Park there will be supportive housing at 1367 University Avenue. There also will be other housing the homeless projects in South Berkeley, at St. Paul’s and at Ephesian through Housing Trust Fund monies.
I made a donation today!!
Thank you, Paola! Great having you participate! Thanks for your support.
