ERF = Employee Relief Fund
REALIZED WORTH
39:01
@Holly - do you happen to know where these funds began? Is the idea / practice very old or recent?
Holly Welch Stubbing
41:01
I believe ERFs started some 20 years ago, but really came into their own with 9/11, Hurricane Harvey and COVID 19

Are these set up as 501 c's

What’s the Return of Investment for an Employee Relief Fund? https://emergencyassistancefdn.org/whats-return-investment-employee-relief-fund/
Holly Welch Stubbing
42:31
E4E Relief is a 501c3 and so there is no need for a company to set up a 501c3.
Michelle Reichenbach
43:09
Not all companies set up an in-house fund as a 501c3, but if they don't, donations are not tax-deductible and grants are not tax-free.

Many companies offer Employee Relief Funds to which employees and executives can contribute. Many executives, like those at Hyatt Hotels, have forfeited or reduced their salaries to provide for the needs of furloughed employees. Some companies are extending health benefits and others have partnered with corporations such as CVS and Amazon to provide temporary employment. Wells Fargo and Capital One have increased wages for frontline workers. For the millions of employees working remotely, HR teams are providing resources and tools for self-care and mindfulness.

I am not very familiar with ERFs...curious how employees access the funds and who determines how much and if employee eligible to receive funds...

And it's tax deductible for contributors. Do the employees who receive the assistance get taxed on that relief funding?
Shanda Vangas
59:17
For companies that run these in-house, in addition to capacity challenges, the emotional toll on the staff who are reviewing the requests, hearing the traumatic stories of their colleagues and having to make the decisions can significant.

@Shanda - GREAT observation. That would be grueling.

01:05:48
@realizedworth it’s something companies often don’t think about when deciding between in-house and partnering with E4E/EAF type organizations. It’s an important consideration.

Thanks Chris, RWI, and Holly and Linda for a fascinating presentation. I have to run to another meeting but would love to connect, Holly and Linda. We recently began piloting a new program called Service Within that seems like a great fit with ERFs. More here: experienceyol.com/service-within. Happy holidays to all!
