Hi everyone! Deevee, CEO of Deed (www.joindeed.com) here. Great to see so many friends and leaders on this call!

01:01:53
AMEN!

01:03:15
REALLY???

01:03:16
I don't believe it

01:03:20
Since you said that the report was dependent on providers/solutions that were available - were there any that weren't included b/c of scheduling or other issues?

01:03:29
He says this on all calls — free ipads

01:03:35
I will believe it when I see it

01:03:40
No, really! It’s true today, friends!

01:05:36
@Kim, yes! Some declined to participate due to capacity at the time of our research, or were unresponsive to our outreach. The list of vendors that were “known” but not featured are on pages 48-49.

01:06:33
@Jessica - thanks!

01:07:03
Been waiting a long time for this Ipad from Chris. Today is the day! Hey @RW team! nice to see you all again!

01:07:40
Daragh! I’m so glad you’re here!

01:07:41
@Daragh - this could be the day!

01:07:52
TEN BILLION

01:07:59
@Daragh hello friend! Nice to have you!

01:08:17
@everyone - much of that investment occurred in the last 24 months.

01:11:39
Ilia has such extensive knowledge of the trends and insights related to this work. Please feel free to drop in questions, contributions or contradictions here in the chat for him!

01:13:30
I’m stuck on the challenge of transitioning to different vendors - it feels like once you have one you end up “stuck” for a variety of reasons. Are there any insights/information on specific transitions from one solution to another? Which ones make that switch/implentation more streamline, etc.

01:14:24
@Ilia do you know who the biggest investors in this space are?

01:15:59
Those are great questions! We’ll get Ilia to weigh in on those.

01:18:29
Love this question, Kayla! (That’s you Kayla, right?) In addition to what Ilia just shared, we touch on this a little later in the presentation and in the report - and if you’re still left with questions, we’ll hook you up with Ilia. ;)

01:19:13
I'm surprised ESG didn't come up with goals/objectives?

01:21:58
Yes it’s me! Thank you

01:22:05
@Kim oh, they most definitely did - the slide we were just on more spoke to the fact that we’re seeing a wide variety of departments “owning” the management of these platforms, potentially speaking to the fact that they are serving objectives beyond what we typically think are the objectives (i.e. ESG and engagement objectives). More on this in the report starting on page 12!

01:23:07
@Jessica - thanks for clarifying :)

01:26:18
@Ilia, virtual volunteering is still relatively new and became more viable over the past year with COVID. Do you see this as a trend that will continue due to the environment or are companies seeking more in-person events again?

01:28:24
Thanks Ilia. Kim at America's Charities.

01:29:14
Awwww, come on with the Grandfather! I’m not that old yet…am I?

01:29:59
@Greg - yes. Yes you are.

01:31:40

Would it be possible to get a copy of the recording/slides after the call?

01:40:46
Yes, Vicky! We will provide access to the recording to everyone.

01:41:18
Wonderful, thank you.

01:47:35
18 months! Things change so much in 18 months.

01:48:10
Or the vendor gets bought

01:48:11
Interesting privacy regulation differences across regions are quite extensive :)

01:50:40
@Sam you’re not wrong! Vendors can come into being and disappear in the span of 18 months. :)

01:54:40
Our vendor is US, we found it difficult ( from Europe) figuring out how things work in there compared to Europe :) Especially data storage part

01:55:48
Thanks Ilia! Amazing insights.

01:56:15
Thanks! So much more in the report

01:58:00
@Ilia did you look at security requirements beyond data management? User access limits by country etc?

01:59:27
Anyone doing employee giving in China?

01:59:28
I would say we looked at security more generally, but of course data residency is a huge component

02:00:04
especially in specific industries/countries with limitations or regulatory requirements

02:00:22
Hi @Megan!!!

02:00:33
Hi @Andrea!

The Trust-Based Philanthropy Project is a five-year, peer-to-peer funder initiative to address the inherent power imbalances between foundations and nonprofits.

02:13:04
Find the report here - https://www.everyaction.com/blog/everyreaction-88-percent-of-affluent-households-gave-in-2020/

02:14:06
For more on the report being discussed - “The study is based on a survey of 1,626 households with a net worth of $1 million or more, excluding the value of their primary home, or an annual household income of $200,000 or more. The median income of survey participants was $350,000, and the median wealth level was $2 million.”

02:15:09
@EVERYONE - this is a great opportunity to share your experience that may not be the same as those being discussed now - don’t be shy. Those comments are the best!!!

02:16:54
Great conversation… and related to the tech platform topic, it’s hard when vendors hard code their own terms that clients can’t customize or modify.

02:18:36
Too often corporate engagement platforms become virtual gated communities with an invite-only approach to building nonprofit relationships.

02:19:03
So true @Greg

02:19:13
I may have missed it but what is the url of the portal?

02:20:34
A report out of the UK indicated that only 12% of respondents describe themselves as digitally mature, and this is regardless of charity size. https://cms.blackbaudcdn.net/media/docs/default-source/bbe-documents/bbe-resources/ebooks/the-status-of-uk-fundraising---2021-benchmark-report-final.pdf

02:21:10
More… • The sector currently rates itself as 5/10 for digital maturity – there is so much potential fororganisations to develop if they have the right digital skills and leadership in place.

02:21:31
https://ssir.org/articles/entry/sharing_sugar

02:22:13
Chris, that matches my experience getting immersed in local direct service nonprofits. There simply is no time or budget to skill up as technology advances.

02:22:54
@Peter - more evidence to your observation from the same report: The survey identified a number of clear barriers faced by non-profits when undergoing a digital transformation:1. BUDGET: 65% reported having no budget for tools and systems, and 59% shared that they had no budget to develop skills

02:23:05
Oh wow, this is such a reality here in Lithuania, and I thoughts this is something that our non profits just did not ''grow up '' yet to catch up with. But I hear low resource sharing is an issue across the globe

02:23:34
@Kristina - yes. There is a digital divide in corporate citizenship.

02:23:47
And yet many nonprofits are looking at technology to find areas to automate and create efficiency. Sort of a chicken and egg situation...

02:24:48
But Non profits find the cooperation so empowering and useful - yeah very rare

02:24:50
“There remain very few examples of how philanthropy has incentivized or funded true collaboration or creating a more collaborative culture for and among nonprofits.” John Brothers

02:25:20
3.LEADERSHIP: 47%reportedalackofdigitalleadershipneededtodrivethetransformation forward, 39% said there was no one pushing a digital agenda within their organisation and 33% said their leaders did not understand the importance of becoming digitally mature

02:25:45
Tinder. For nonprofits/

02:26:28
Yeah !

02:26:57
Again - a number of the quotes / data points I’ve been sharing can be found here - https://cms.blackbaudcdn.net/media/docs/default-source/bbe-documents/bbe-resources/ebooks/the-status-of-uk-fundraising---2021-benchmark-report-final.pdf

02:28:53
Thanks everyone!

02:29:05
Phenomenal! Thank you, John and Megan!

02:29:06
Thanks Megan and John!! So many powerful nuggets in there.

02:32:48
Hi Peter Dudley! Kathleen from Exelixis here!

02:33:08
Who is currently leading the charge for the Museum of Volunteering on the Mall?

02:35:12
Hi Kathleen!

02:36:14
What are the required investments in the nonprofit sector to fully take advantage of what the current technology offers?

02:37:11
@Greg - great question.

02:37:35
@Dana - could you share the link to the recording and resources for the Museum of Volunteering

02:38:38
Yup, here it is: https://zoom.us/rec/play/ebj6OlWUeGW1orShN_AD0ch5Lwx0p8gvObl3OXdZTKb3FUExWJW7gpgR0wxI3LvOVADxN-W2B8zC3Fc.NzOYwXDzq17TiY4v

02:39:10
Thank you

02:39:25
Despite great giving and volunteering technology, an estimated $US 4 – 7 billion dollars of matching funds go unclaimed each year.

02:39:53
https://doublethedonation.com/tips/matching-gift-participation-rates/

02:41:16
@Everyone, this came up on a Gates sponsored discussion with IDEO - a single platform to upload opportunities and info and then see this go to multiple platforms.

02:41:59
I don't know why I sit here surprised that the issues are the same like e.g. local volunteering platforms in need to be integrated into the platforms

02:43:38
Well said @Steve. The cost from a lack of CSR platform interoperability is born disproportionally by the nonprofit sector

02:44:30
The Technology Association of Grantmakers partnered with NetHope, TechSoup and NTEN on a guide to digital infrastructure. Lots of discussion around nonprofits needing more unrestricted funding to implement digital infrastructure. https://www.tagtech.org/news/521162/TAG-Launches-Digital-Infrastructure-Funding-Guide-with-NetHope-NTEN-TechSoup.htm

02:45:01
Or working with fundraising nonprofits themselves to share data so employees donating to a colleague’s Team In Training (just as an example) page can show up properly

02:45:30
@Sam - great share. Thank you!

02:45:32
And we need to talk about how much of the funding sent to nonprofits is being wasted because of the for profit inefficiencies. Kicking the can down the road.

02:45:56
🙌🏼 @Sam

02:46:15
@Anoinette - great question. To further that line of inquiry Are the priorities of the private sector the right priorities for nonprofits? Is the current emphasis on measurement, reporting and annual events a help or hindrance to achieving progress?

02:48:33
Priorities yes @Chris but I’m talking even just trying to get your grant money distributed efficiently and many of the limitations of the platforms are felt on both sides

02:48:50
Are the priorities of the private sector the right priorities for nonprofits? Is the current emphasis on measurement, reporting and annual events a help or hindrance to achieving progress?

02:49:42
@Everyone - don’t be shy. We need your questions, contributions (more links/info) AND contradictions.

02:51:12
Peter the renegade - Love it!

02:51:28
- Every(Re)Action | 88 Percent of Affluent Households Gave in 2020, Social Justice Motivation Grew Slowly- The findings indicate that over half (54.6 percent) of affluent donors are unsure whether their gifts are making their desired impact (Section 8: Affluent Donors’ Beliefs about Societal Impact)

02:51:45
https://www.everyaction.com/blog/everyreaction-affluent-donors-trust-nonprofits-to-create-societal-change/

02:53:05
Getting to the heart of it 🤝 @Peter

02:53:12
This is the source report from Bank of America which has a wealth of insights (https://scholarworks.iupui.edu/bitstream/handle/1805/26654/bank-america-sept21.pdf)

02:54:04
Employee as the navigator 🙌🏼

02:54:35
If you want to understand the systemic biases of any technology platform just follow the money. The Iron Law of Optimization is that all technology systems are optimized to serve the interests of those paying the bills.

02:54:49
To Natalie’s point: Engaging employees in citizenship as the primary actor allows them to play three critical roles inauthenticating and legitimizing corporate community investment efforts. First, employees authenticatethe CSR program based on their own experiences and knowledge.

02:55:11
Second,Transformative employee engagement opens the door to collective action at scale when addressing socialand environmental issues. According to research, at least “25% of people need to take a stand before largescalesocial change occurs. This idea of a social tipping point applies to standards in the workplace, andany type of movement or initiative”38.

02:55:31
Finally, employees become effective channels through which tocommunicate complex ideas across networks of both weak and strong ties in the workplace and in theircommunities.

02:56:20
@Greg - great observation re: Law of Optimization.

02:56:43
The Iron Law explains why employees and nonprofits are so often underserved by systems that in theory have been designed to serve them.

02:57:29
Interesting insight: We’ve learned from our network effect that volunteers are twice as likely as non-volunteers to make a donation.

02:57:31
This is for the for profits - what are you doing to find nonprofits your employees are serving if they aren’t recording those hours $ in your system? Do you use your match requests as a point of discovery?

02:58:38
@Faisal - HEY brother!

02:58:47
+1 @Natalie

02:59:25
🙌🏼 @Peter small community nonprofits are who saved us all during COVID

02:59:40
Hi Chris! Very excited to engage, though sorry to be late.

03:00:04
Thank you so much for this. It was very informative. Need to run now its getting late here

03:01:17
Silvia Brasil the platforms are excellent and facilitating the management of volunteers, but challenge1: volunteers are too lazy to feed data, assessments, they need a manager to do this. Challenge 2: We have NGOs with a significant number of volunteers, but the price of maintaining the platforms is very expensive and becomes unfeasible for them.

03:01:37
Thank you Natalie, Steve and Peter! Such a great convo.

03:02:20
Super insightful! Thank you so much for sharing your perspectives, Steve, Natalie and Peter.

03:02:23
Thank you all!

03:02:28
Incredible comments section! This panel could’ve been populated many times over

03:02:49
+1 Steve 💯

03:03:05
👏🏻 thanks for keeping the focus on how we in power should and MUST do better!

03:03:30
+1 Antoinette

03:05:49
Of course, Chris!

03:06:01
👍 @Sophia look forward to seeing how we can support your project

03:06:12
Here is the Better Giving Studio website and you can sign up for the newsletter at the bottom: https://www.bettergivingstudio.com/

03:06:20
@chris the solution won’t be a new digital service that’s captures all the world nonprofit data, the solution will be greater interoperability across the systems nonprofits are already using

03:06:45
Ditto to Greg there

03:08:22
No….

03:08:49
Woo hoo 🥂 cheers to Greg !

03:10:36
