I like to tell my students that I want them to build their perfect career. After determining their strengths and values and what they like (working with people/things/ideas, working indoors/outside, etc., then when they are looking at career choices they can determine if the career fits their needs/wants. It's a little abstract for 8th graders but it's one way to approach it.
