Banishment and transportation from Scotland
Until the development of the modern prison system, banishment and transportation were two of the possible sentences used by the authorities to punish those who had broken the law.

In this talk, Ken Nisbet will:

* explain the difference between the two
* look at how and why, transportation developed and replaced overseas banishment
* exlplore why internal banishment continued to be used as a punishment during the 19th century

He will also look at how to find and interpret the sources we can use to research those who were banished or transported. Ken will be taking examples from his own research and family history, having had three brothers of one of his ancestors transported to Australia for various crimes committed in Edinburgh.

Ken Nisbet
Ken Nisbet is secretary of the Scottish Genealogy Society and of the Scottish Association of Family History Societies and is on the user group for the family history centre in Edinburgh. He is a regular lecturer to Scotland's family history societies. He has written a number of books, all of which are published by the Scottish Genealogy Society, and tutors some of the classes the society runs.
