OPTIMAL: An OPTimzed Imaging Mass Cytometry AnaLysis approach for Segmentation and Data Exploration
We are delighted to have Dr. Andrew Filby, Director of the Newcastle Flow Cytometry Core Facility, part of the Newcastle University Single Cell Unit and Lead of the Innovation, Methodology and Application (IMA) Research Theme, as our next Scientist in the Spotlight.

In this talk, Dr Filby will present OPTIMAL, a framework for optimizing and validating existing tools for single-cell segmentation of multiplexed tissue images, data QC and normalization as well as clustering and spatial neighborhood analysis. Dr Filby will present this approach both in the context of well-characterized human tonsil tissue as a benchmark but also as part of the UK Coronavirus Immunology Consortium (UK-CIC) project using Imaging Mass Cytometry™ to understand disease progression in post-mortem tissues.

Dr Andrew Filby
Director, Cytometry and Single Cell Core Technology Unit @Newcastle University
Dr. Andrew Filby is the Director of the flow cytometry core facility at Newcastle University in the UK. He received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Huddersfield, and his Ph.D. in molecular and cellular immunology from the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in Mill Hill, London. After his post doc, he joined the London Research Institute as the deputy head of the cytometry core facility. Filby continues to innovate and develop new cytometric applications in his current position at Newcastle University.
