Why does religion still exist in the twenty-first century? Why do so many people continue to argue about the questions it raises? And what purpose does it serve in our lives? Addressing these questions, Dr. Pagels will share insights from her life and career as a scholar of religion, emphasizing the importance of thinking critically and historically about religion as part of our world today.

In her work, she investigates the history of religion, focusing on early Christian texts and on how politics and religion interacted in the formation of the Bible. She is the author of numerous publications, including translations, scholarly articles and monographs, and six New York Times bestsellers. Her most recent book is Why Religion? A Personal Story, published in November 2018. In 2013 she received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University, and, in 2016, she received the National Medal for the Humanities from U.S. President Barack Obama. Ian Wilson (Associate Professor @U of A Augustana) Ian Wilson is a scholar of religion, specializing in the Hebrew Bible and the histories and cultures of ancient Israel and the Near East. At Augustana, he teaches courses on the religions of the world, theories of religion, biblical studies, the ancient Near East, and related topics. He also serves as Director of the Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life, and as Associate Editor for the Journal of Hebrew Scriptures.
