Chlorine contact basins (CCB) are used in water treatment facilities to treat water and wastewater. Chlorine treatment is a standard method of wastewater disinfection, reducing or inactivating pathogens. However, adding chlorine to wastewater does not guarantee effective results; inefficient mixing can create dead zones which lead to unequal residence times, while excess chlorine may cause a public health risk. The design and hydraulic efficiency of a chlorine contact basin determines the effectiveness of the treatment process. Computational fluid dynamics modeling using FLOW-3D HYDRO provides actionable insight during the design phase of a CCB for a variety of flow conditions and configurations.
