Depression and mood disorders occur in 25% of terminally ill patients. A recent study suggests up to 30% of all prescriptions written for antidepressant medications are not prescribed to treat depression. This presentation will examine the many reasons why we may use antidepressants in hospice and palliative care. A case study will be presented and discussed.
-Describe the pharmacology and classifications of antidepressant medications
-Discuss the indications for use, both FDA-labeled and non-FDA-labeled
-Recognize safety considerations of using antidepressant medications in hospice and palliative care patients.
