Exploring the “K” in K-Pop

K-pop has become a worldwide phenomenon, dominating music charts, fashion trends, and visual culture. K-pop’s rise would seem to be a story about the power of social media, music industry systematization, and Korea’s embrace of Western popular culture. However, musicians, producers, and creative directors have incorporated Korean culture in lyrics, music, and visual elements since the beginning of the K-pop boom. This talk explores how traditional Korean art and culture became global and contemporary through K-pop.
