PLENARY SESSION 10:00AM-10:55 AM Edward R. Matthews, Chief Executive Officer of ADAPT Community Network (formerly UCP of NYC), has worked in the developmental disabilities field since 1974. He was appointed CEO of UCP of NYC in 1989, and it is now the largest UCP affiliate in the United Sates providing services to more than 20,000 children, adults and their families throughout New York City. He spent 10 years in State Government where he directed the team responsible for the acquisition of all residential and day program sites to implement the deinstitutionalization of Willowbrook.

SESSION 11:00AM -11:55AM "ADVOCATING AT THE IEP MEETING- STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS THAT PARENT NEEDS TO KNOW" The goal of this workshop is to empower parents and caregivers to be more effective advocates for their children and get better educational outcomes. Attendees will understand why the Federal law is the key and will learn new skills and strategies to better prepare them for their child’s next IEP meeting and working with their child’s school. It is as simple as learning your ABC’s and doing your homework.

SESSION 12:00PM -12:55PM "MEDICAID WAIVER, SELF-DIRECTION, AND INDEPENDENT HOUSING" This session will offer an introduction to Medicaid Waiver benefits through OPWDD, basic components of Self-Direction, and the connection between Self Direction and strong independent housing plans.

Parent of Justin, now a 34 years old young man with Intellectual and Developmental Disability.
Michael received a B.S. in Sociology from the University of Hartford in 1974, and entered the IDD field in 1978 working for UCP of NYS providing recreation opportunities in residences throughout NYC. He went back to school and got a Masters in Therapeutic Recreation & Developmental Disabilities from LIU in 1981, doing his clinical internship working at the Willowbrook State School on Staten Island.

SESSION 1:00PM -1:55PM PARENT PANEL: HOW TO BE AN EFFECTIVE ADVOCATE FOR YOUR LOVED ONE WITH A DISABILITY ? Parents and guardians are often the best advocates for their children. This workshop will focus on empowering families with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to advocate for their loved one with a disability. The presenters are family members who will give practical information about how to build a network of support to effect change for your family member and others in the 1/00 community.

Psychologist and Director of Psychology of Adult Programs for Adapt Community Network
Dr. Avi Avigdor is a Licensed Psychologist and Director of Psychology of Adult Programs for Adapt Community Network. He has over 10 years of experience working in agencies that serve individuals with developmental disabilities. He provides support to Article 16 clinic, residential, and day hab programs throughout the agency.
Michael Boardman
Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) with ADAPT Community Network Education Services
SESSION 2:00PM- 2:55PM "POSITIVE APPROACHES TO BEHAVIOR IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS" Dr. Avi Avigdor and Michael Boardman will present a framework for understanding behaviors and their functions and discuss strategies designed to prevent challenging behavior and respond to challenging behavior so that it is less likely to occur in the future. They will also discuss what types of behavior support services and counseling services are available to parents, caregivers, and staff. This includes discussion of services provided by Early Intervention, The Committee on Preschool Special Education, Article 28 clinics, Article 16 clinics, and Dayhab/Residential programs.

SESSION 3:00 PM-3:55 PM "MENTAL HEALTH IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENCE; HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD" The webinar will focus on supporting mental health in children and adolescents. Tips for helping youth cope with their emotions and challenges will be included along with when to seek assistance from professionals.
