Community Education: End-of-Life Care with Death Doulas

As the death positive and death empowerment movements continue to evolve and grow, we see an ever-increasing need to help bridge the critical gap at the end-of-life stage. Dying is a process we will all face at some point in our life’s journey. Doulas are advocates and allies who provide continuous, compassionate, non-judgmental care and informational support.

End-of-life doulas are non-medical professionals who can help the dying make peace with the dying process. End-of-life doulas, also known as Elder Doulas, can serve the elderly for years before their expected time of death. Elder doulas are specifically trained to provide holistic physical, emotional, and spiritual care for the elderly.

Objectives:

• Describe various terms for death doula
• Explore how death doulas can provide end-of-life support
• Discuss how death doulas work as part of the interdisciplinary care team

Presenter: Dr. Maurya Cockrell

Dr. Cockrell, a member of the VOYCE Board of Directors, is an established SDoH Solutionary from St. Louis, Missouri. She holds a BS in health management from Saint Louis University, with a minor in theological studies, an MA from Webster University in human resources management, and a doctorate in health professions education from Logan University. Dr. Cockrell founded Leaves Speak Healthcare in 2017.
