Parks Canada’s new National Urban Parks program AND Rouge Nat. Urban Park (23 times area of Central Park!).
Parks Canada’s new National Urban Parks program AND Rouge Nat. Urban Park.
Two great presentations & dialogue.
Indeed, Rouge National Urban Park will be 23 times larger than Central Park in New York... also quite different, in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area. It's led and managed by superb Parks Canada, which mostly deals with national parks and preservation areas.
A rich assembly of natural, cultural and agricultural landscapes, Rouge National Urban Park is home to amazing biodiversity, Carolinian ecosystems, one of the region’s largest marshes, a beach at Lake Ontario, kilometers of trails, amazing hiking opportunities, and human history dating back over 10,000 years, including some of Canada's oldest known Indigenous sites.
Once fully established, Rouge National Urban Park will be one of the largest and best protected urban parks of its kind in the world, spanning 79.1 square kilometres in the heart of Canada's largest and most diverse metropolitan area.
Introduction to Parks Canada’s new National Urban Parks program
Summary: Building on over 110 years of history in the creation of national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas, in August 2021 Parks Canada launched a new program to create a network of national urban parks. Join us to learn about our progress over the past year, from the exploration of proposed candidate locations, to the development of a policy framework, to the launch of stakeholder engagements. Working in collaboration with partners nationwide, Canada’s network of national urban parks will contribute to protecting biodiversity, supporting climate resilience, connecting people to nature, improving mental health and wellness, and increasing social inclusion. Parks Canada will also be working closely with Indigenous partners to ensure national urban parks also provide space for Indigenous stewardship, promote Indigenous voices and stories, and offer opportunities
