Professor Anthony Vidler online talk "From J.M. Gandy to Pablo Bronstein and Back: Images of Architectonic Hells 1780 to 1830"
Join us for an online talk with Professor Anthony Vidler, architectural historian, critic, curator and Professor at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union.

Chaired by Sir John Soane’s Museum’s Exhibitions Curator, Louise Stewart, this talk will chart artistic and architectural visions of hell, from the romantic depictions of hell and death in Soane’s day to the satirical dystopias and troubled imaginings of contemporary artists in our present age. Professor Vidler will discuss his own research and writing on the uncanny, the ideal (and evil) city and the role of architecture in society; with particular reference to the impact of climate change and rapid urban development on our contemporary built environment.

This event complements our current exhibition, Pablo Bronstein: Hell in its Heyday, a nostalgic and ironic tour of the artist’s architectural visions of hell, in a new series of large-scale watercolours created especially for Sir John Soane’s Museum.
