Nexus Between Sustainable Development, Ocean Conservation and Aquatic Animal Welfare

This roundtable will explore the relationship between improved aquatic animal welfare and achieving the UN sustainable development goals, focusing on the historical neglect of aquatic animals and why we should put them front and center in the discussion on sustainable development.

With guest speakers from both the ocean conservation and animal rights movements, we will ask how the adoption of an animal welfare-based approach to ocean conservation can accelerate progress towards SDG 14. Truly sustainable use of the oceans should and must take the main stakeholders at play: the aquatic animals themselves. Speakers will discuss key pillars of intersectionality between aquatic animal welfare and sustainability. Results of the discussion will contribute to a more holistic approach to the UN Oceans Conference.
