The 2016 peace accord between the Colombian government and the FARC rebels, signed 5 years ago, mandated a Truth, Coexistence and Non-Recurrence Commission to uncover the truth about violations during the conflict, promote recognition of the victims and the responsibilities of those in the conflict, and foster coexistence in order to ensure such violence is not repeated.
Many women and their organizations across Colombia have come together to document their own experiences, share their testimonies, offer an analysis of the structural roots of violence against women in a patriarchal society, and provide recommendations to ensure such violence does not recur. They recently delivered their report – “Truth Is: Politicizing women’s pain and emotions” – to the Truth Commission, which will present its final report by June 27, 2022.
Join us to hear Colombian women from the Cauca, Córdova, and Meta departments talk about their experiences from the conflict. They will share their recommendations to the Truth Commission to address all forms of violence against women and ensure a strong gender lens for understanding the conflict and building peace.
