Ato Girma Wake
AviaDev Patron and Former CEO, Ethiopian Airlines
Referred to many of the Godfather of African Aviation, Ato Girma Wake served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines from 2004 to 2011. In this role, he is largely credited with building the airline to where it is today. His career includes more than 45 years in the airline industry, including with Gulf Air and latterly as Chairman of RwandAir. At the peak of his leadership, Ethiopian Airlines registered the most significant growth since its founding in 1946 and he famously led the airline during its most successful years when it first topped the continent as the most profitable airliner. Girma first joined the airline in 1965 as a 22 year old second year university student at the Addis Ababa university. Girma has supported AviaDev since inception in 2016 and serves as event patron.
Sean Mendis
Aviation Expert
Sean Mendis is a respected voice of African aviation, who has opinions and is not afraid to use them! Based in Malawi, he lives and breathes aviation and has a raft of industry experience. returned to Ghana in 2018 as Chief Operations Officer of Africa World Airlines, resuming a role he had previously held from 2010 to 2012 during the airline's startup. From 2005 to 2010, Sean was part of the launch management team of Ghana International Airlines. In 2013, he moved to Somalia to manage Mogadishu's Aden Abdulle International Airport for SKA International Group under contract from the Somali Federal Government. Between 2014 and 2018, he helped launch multiple aviation business lines for SKA, including a jet-fuel terminal in the UAE, and a cargo airline based in Uganda.
Kwame Bekoe
Aviation Professional
Kwame Bekoe, an Aviation Professional and Executive MBA candidate on a joint program with Columbia and London Business School is an Aviator at heart, with a mind and passion for Africa. Having established a broad technical and commercial background in Aviation, coming from a successful career spanning 16-years with Airbus and GECAS, his career evolved from core engineering, where he led high profile projects including designing Tier-1 structural parts on aircraft, to commercial where he developed expertise to lead and support the sales, marketing and leasing of aircraft and business service solutions to clients across the continent. In 2018 he was recognised as one of Ghana’s top 40 under 40 leaders in the Aviation category, and subsequently in 2020 he received recognition from UN’s MIPAD (Influential People of African Descent) as a top 100 under 40 personality for business and entrepreneurship.
