EES Tuesday Spotlight: Jewels of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Treasures from the Collections of the Worcester Art Museum
This Tuesday Spotlight lecture within our wider theme of 'Visualising Egypt' explores the diversity and complexity of Egyptian art and how it has inspired contemporary artists.

Jewels of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Treasures from the Worcester Art Museum puts the Museum's extensive collection of ancient Egyptian jewelry and minor arts on view, much of it for the first time. This collection, largely assembled by Kingsmill Marrs (d. 1912) and Laura Norcross Marrs (1845-1926) is remarkable for both its breadth and quality, thanks to the guidance of Howard Carter, whom they met on a trip to Egypt. The exhibit and catalog were co-curated by Peter Lacovara and Yvonne J. Markowitz and details the history of the collectors and their time and the development of ancient Egyptian ornament.

Peter Lacovara is the Director of The Ancient Egyptian Archaeology and Heritage Fund. He was Senior Curator of Ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern Art at the Michael C. Carlos Museum from 1998 to 2014, and as Assistant Curator in the Department of Ancient Egyptian, Nubian and Near Eastern Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from 1980. Also he is Consulting Curator at the Albany Institute of History and Art. He has excavated at the Valley of the Kings, Malqata, Abydos, Hierakonpolis and at the Giza Plateau, and now is directing work at the Deir el-Ballas.
