Attorney Karl Nastrom, J.D., Indian Child Welfare Law Center, talks about the stressors that attorneys and other professionals in the volatile field of family law experience; the various sources of stress; secondary trauma and compassion fatigue; common reactions and responses; and implications for practice.

Bob Schuneman, Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers Outreach Coordinator, further illuminates the nature, signs and symptoms of secondary trauma and stress, providing suggestions and recommendations. He also provides resources for attorneys who find themselves or a colleague in this situation.

Karl Nastrom, MA, MD

Karl S. Nastrom is an attorney licensed in Minnesota, Alabama, and California who has practiced family law, criminal defense, and intellectual property litigation at various times since 2001. Most recently, he practiced family law in Santa Clara County, California for eight years, from 2013 through 2021. In his family law practice, Mr. Nastrom represented clients ranging from indigent families to families with $100 million estates in trials, contested hearings, and settlement negotiations related to all aspects of family law, including child custody, child support, domestic violence, alimony, paternity, marital dissolution, property division, and marital and pre-marital agreements. Mr. Nastrom also served as a court-appointed settlement judge in Santa Clara County and San Mateo County. Mr. Nastrom is currrently with the Indian Child Welfare Law Center in Minnesota. Bob Schuneman, is the Outreach Coordinator for Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Minnesota. He is a graduate of Mitchell Hamline School of Law and holds an MBA in Marketing from the University of Saint Thomas. Before becoming a lawyer, he was a business executive for many years. He taught business courses on graduate and undergraduate levels at Twin Cities colleges and universities for nineteen years. Before joining LCL, Bob practiced as a solo attorney in Woodbury, representing business and individual clients.
