Live from the Farallones: The Fantastic Journey of the Farallones Fur Seals
Northern Fur Seals are one of five species of seals and sea lions that come to the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Their story is one of the more dramatic ones on the Island and stretches back long before it was a Refuge. Once the most numerous pinniped on the island, after decades of fur trading the population was locally extirpated by around 1834 and was absent from the island for about a century. We have seen the recovery of this species from zero to thriving over the 50+ years we’ve been doing scientific monitoring on the island and we are excited to share this success story live from the place where it all happened. Grab a tissue box and a celebratory beverage to “cheers” as Farallon Biologist Jim Tietz takes you through the ups and downs of the saga. (spoiler alert: it has a happy ending… so far.)
