Plate tectonics shapes the world we live on. Convergent and divergent margins shape the landscape, but so does mantle convection. The up and down-welling of the mantle creates a dynamic topography thousands of kilometres from plate margins. We will look at a few examples of dynamic topography from Australia. Subduction too has shaped the Australian landscape. Australia is currently tilting to the north-east as it slowly sinks under the Pacific plate. The consequences of this tilt has drained the Murray Basin, and left the Nullarbor high and dry.
