The Unexpected Storm: How the apolitical assassination of former Prime Minister Abe became a political tragedy for the LDP
Two days before the 2022 Upper House election, former Prime Minister Abe Shinzō was assassinated during a campaign speech in Nara. Despite the turmoil caused by the incident, the LDP successfully secured the majority on July 10. With the majority in both houses and free from new elections for another three years, the Cabinet of Kishida Fumio was supposed to enjoy a stable period. Following the election, Kishida was expected to push through bold reforms in the field of economy, national security, and social welfare. However, despite the apolitical nature of Abe´s assassination, its effects placed the LDP in a deep political crisis. This presentation will clarify the context of the mentioned events, discussing their effects on the Kishida cabinet and the LDP in general in an overview of a turbulent year for Japanese politics.
