Risk and Safety Assessment 101

Assessment is defined as the collection of information to inform decision-making about a child, youth or family. In child welfare, risk and safety assessments are separate but related processes that are foundational to identifying the issues facing a family, designing a plan, and providing services to support the family in addressing the issues.

Join us for this webinar to:
• Learn the definitions of risk and safety assessment and what the differences are between them
• Understand how safety is managed across the life of a case and how assessments are applied differently in different settings (where there is no open case; an open case with in-home services; and out-of-home care)
• Develop an understanding of common risk/assessment instruments and learn about best practices in completing assessments and using them in conjunction with professional judgment to inform decision-making.

About Our Presenter:
Theresa Costello is the founder and Executive Director for Action for Child Protection, a non-profit organization formed in 1984 to provide technical assistance services to child welfare agencies.

Action for Child Protection, developed the Safe Assessment Family Evaluation (SAFE) model in partnership with the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation in 1986. Since that time, numerous agencies have used this strengths-based, family-centered, and trauma-informed model to inform child welfare decision-making. Ms. Costello has a master's degree from the University of Minnesota Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.
