Immigration: Key to the Future - Policies and Practices
The federal government, which determines where refugee resettlement occurs, directed that approximately 6 percent of the refugees admitted to the US since 2002 be resettled in New York, and of that number, 90 percent be resettled in upstate New York. Refugees and other immigrants make important contributions to upstate communities as they fill jobs in local businesses, invest in local housing markets, create new businesses, and pay taxes. The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) in partnership with the Government Law Center at Albany Law School and the Rockefeller Institute of Government recently published a new book—“Immigration: Key to the Future – The Benefits of Resettlement to Upstate New York.” The book explores recent trends in immigration in upstate New York, state and local policies that support immigration and resettlement, and the impact new residents have had on their communities. In this webinar, panelists will present key findings from the book and discuss the role and future of immigration in Upstate New York.
