Gouache is often overlooked, yet it is such a versatile medium for its many different application techniques, particularly in both disciplines of botanical and natural history illustration. Simon will talk about the positives and negatives of working with this opaque watercolour medium, from a botanical artists point of view. And about the need for the artist to be competent and methodical in dry brush painting.
BIO Simon Williams (Fellow SBA) originally trained as a commercial natural history illustrator in the late 90’s. Gouache was a favoured medium for such work, due to its opacity and reproduction value. Over the past 20 years, Simon has carved out a career in illustration, concentrating more on botanical painting along with tutoring and in 2013 became Course Director for the Society of Botanical Artists. Simon classes himself just as much a plantsman as he is a botanical artist.
