To reduce environmental impacts, many industries created alternative products and processes, but how do we determine whether these “green” alternatives are preferable to conventional ones? And by what means do we determine a product's environmental impact? Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is a practice that seeks to answer these questions and more.

The stages of a product's life cycle include material extraction, processing, manufacturing, transportation, use, reuse, and waste management. An LCA is a holistic evaluation of the cumulative environmental impacts of each stage of a system and may be used to analyze products, processing and transportation, activities, organizations, and even cities – sometimes with surprising or counterintuitive results.
