NADA Curated: María Elena Ortiz in Conversation

Join NADA on June 28, at 6:30pm ET, for an online conversation celebrating Reset, the first edition of NADA Curated, organized by María Elena Ortiz. NADA Curated is a new series of online exhibitions highlighting artists and galleries from NADA’s international community through curated thematic presentations. Reset features 19 international artists who “express personal narratives, fantasies, new technologies, and unjust realities.”

For this event Ortiz will be joined by artists Atong Atem, Madjeen Isaac, and Timothy Yanick Hunter–all of whom are featured in the online exhibition. The discussion will center around the exhibition, featured works, and how artists “reconsider what our humanity means to us today.”

At PAMM, Ortiz has organized several projects including Allied with Power: African and African Diaspora Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Art Collection (2020); The Other Side of Now: Foresight in Contemporary Caribbean Art (2019); Latinx Art Sessions (2019); william cordova: now’s the time (2018); Beatriz Santiago Muñoz: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors (2016); Ulla von Brandenburg: It Has a Golden Sun and an Elderly Grey Moon (2017); Firelei Báez: Bloodlines (2015); and Carlos Motta: Histories for the Future. Her writing has been published globally. A recipient of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) and Independent Curators International (ICI) Travel Award for Central America and the Caribbean, Ortiz’s curatorial practice is informed by the connections of Latinx, Latin American, Black communities in the US, and the wider African diaspora. Atong Atem Atong Atem is an Ethiopian born, South Sudanese artist and writer living in Narrm/ Melbourne. Atem works primarily with photography and video to explore migrant narratives, postcolonial practices in the African diaspora and the exploration of identity through portraiture. Atem has exhibited her work across Australia, including National Gallery of Victoria, Gertrude Contemporary, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Internationally at Photo Basel, Red Hook Labs in New York, Vogue Fashion Fair in Milan and Unseen Amsterdam art fair. Atem was the recipient of the inaugural La Prairie Art Award in 2022, National Gallery of Victoria and MECCA M-Power scholarship in 2018 as well as the Brisbane Powerhouse Melt Portrait Prize in 2017. Madjeen Isaac Madjeen Isaac (b. 1996) is a Brooklyn based Haitian-American visual artist whose practice is rooted in reconstructing mélanges of urban and tropical environments to create utopias and realms of her imagination. Growing up in a predominantly Caribbean neighborhood and being a first generation American influences Isaac’s process of commemorating her community, memories and cultures that shaped her upbringing as she centers narratives of Black and Caribbean folks engaging in abundance of joy, communality and leisure. Isaac received a BFA in Fine Art from The Fashion Institute of Technology (2018) and an MA in Art+Edu & Community Practice at New York University (2021). Timothy Yanick Hunter Timothy Yanick Hunter (b. 1990 Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a multidisciplinary artist and curator. Hunter’s practice employs strategies of bricolage to examine non-neutral relationships relating to Black and Afro-diasporic experiences as well as concurrent strategies of decolonization. His approach alternates between exploratory and didactic, with a focus on the political, cultural and social richness of the Black diaspora. Hunter’s work often delves into speculative narratives and the intersections of physical space, digital space and the intangible. Hunter received his BA from the University of Toronto, and has been artist in residence at the Art Gallery of Ontario and PADA Studios in Barreiro, Portugal. He will be included in the 2022 Toronto Biennial of Art, and has exhibited at Gallery 44, Toronto (2021); A Space Gallery, Toronto (2020); 92Y, New York (2020); Art Gallery of Guelph, Guelph (2019) and PADA Studios, Barreiro (2019); among others. Hunter lives and works in Toronto.
