Prostate Cancer Awareness and Disparities: Crucial Conversations

The burden of prostate cancer, like many diseases, is not borne equally. One in 6 Black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime, vs. 1 in 8 white men, and Black men are more than twice as likely to die. Researchers are working to unravel the complex reasons why disparities persist for prostate cancer and for so many other health conditions.

During Black History Month, PCF begins a yearlong effort to raise awareness of prostate cancer early detection and screening among minority communities. PCF CEO Dr. Charles J. Ryan, MD, speaks with two leaders who have dedicated their careers to understanding and reducing health disparities. His guests will discuss their experiences working with patients and healthcare providers, their research, and their efforts to dispel myths and educate the public about prostate cancer awareness.

About our guests:
Dr. Michael A. LeNoir, MD, is an allergist and pediatrician who has practiced clinical medicine for more than 40 years, receiving multiple honors and awards for excellence in practice and community service. In 2014 he was elected and served as the 114th President of the National Medical Association. Dr. LeNoir founded a non-profit, the African American Wellness Project (AAWP) more than a decade ago, to address health disparities in the Black community and his organization is committed to informing minorities about how to advocate for and take charge of their own health.

Dr. Leanne Burnham, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at Morehouse School of Medicine. Her research expertise includes prostate cancer health disparities within the lab, clinic, and community. Her work aims to dismantle remaining obstacles in cancer screening and treatment options. Dr. Burnham’s research focuses on biological determinants of prostate cancer tumor aggressiveness and worse outcome in Black men. She is also a PCF Young Investigator.
