Webinar Speakers

Jill Jonnes 
Jill Jonnes is the author of Conquering Gotham, Empires of Light, and South Bronx Rising. She was named a National Endowment for the Humanities scholar and has received several grants from the Ford Foundation. She lives in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2002, she updated South Bronx Rising with a 2nd edition describing the amazing rebuilding and revival led by grass-roots non-profits in The Bronx. And now, twenty years later, in a 3rd edition, she tells the continuing story of the amazing Bronx activists who have been enriching their community with the arts, culture, and savvy political activism.

Nilka Martell 
Nilka Martell is a community organizer and an environmental activist in The Bronx. She founded an organization called #LovingTheBronx, which has led efforts to advocate for capping an exposed portion of the Cross Bronx Expressway, in her neighborhood, in Parkchester. She is also author of the forward to the 3rd edition of South Bronx Rising.
