6th Annual Spotlight on Breastfeeding Research

You are invited to register for the 6th Annual Spotlight on Breastfeeding Research Conference which takes place online from 9.00am - 1.00pm on Friday, 10th March 2023.
This event will highlight the most up-to-date breastfeeding research from those who are currently engaged in supporting women, writing policy and working in practice or education.
It will also provide a platform for mothers facing breastfeeding challenges to share their experiences and to contribute to our future research plans.
Professor Marlene Sinclair, Emeritus Professor of Midwifery Research at Ulster University, will chair the event, which will start with an address from Dr Joanna Purdy who is currently Interim Chair of the Breastfeeding Strategy Research Workstrand.
This year’s keynote will be a presentation by Dame Tina Lavender, Professor of Maternal and Newborn Health and Director of a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre, who will discuss current challenges and opportunities in breastfeeding research.
The Doctoral Midwifery Research Society is funded by the Health and Social Care Research & Development Division of the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland and the Ulster University Maternal, Fetal and Infant Research Centre.

Her current research projects focus on breastfeeding trauma, nipple pain, the use of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) for birth trauma, the reduction of maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity in an Asian setting, fetal alcohol syndrome, breastfeeding babies with cardiac conditions and epigenetics associated with maternal depression. She has completed specific training in EMDR Therapy Training Part 1 (2017) and Part 2 (2018) and is one of the first midwives in the UK to have achieved this level of training. Marlene has successfully completed her first supervised practice in birth trauma and is currently supervising three PhD projects exploring the impact of EMDR in birth related trauma. Dr Joanna Purdy (Public Health Development Officer @Institute of Public Health) Dr Joanna Purdy graduated from the University of Ulster in 1999 with a degree in Consumer Studies, followed by a PhD in 2003. Joanna joined the Institute of Public Health in 2012 as Public Health Development Officer and works across several policy areas including, breastfeeding, tobacco control, alcohol, gambling, and obesity prevention. Joanna had a lead role in the development of the updated Health Impact Assessment Guidance (HIA) and has contributed to academic courses on HIA. Joanna has supported the development of public health policy through evidence reviews, policy evaluations, consultation responses and presentation of oral and written evidence to government committees. Professor Dame Tina Lavender (Professor of Maternal and Newborn Health and Director of the Centre for Childbirth @Women’s and Newborn Health (World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine) Dame Tina holds an honorary Chair at The University of Manchester. She is a Visiting Professor at the University of Nairobi and University of Ulster. She leads a programme of research, with a focus on improving maternal and newborn outcomes. Dame Tina is Director of an NIHR Global Health Research Unit on the prevention and management of Stillbirth and Neonatal Death, involving eight countries. She is Associate Editor of the African Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health. Dame Tina is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Midwives and she also acts as a regular Advisor to the World Health Organization, particularly in relation to research priority setting, guideline development and as a reviewer of educational materials. In 2016 she was nominated as one of BBC’s 100 most inspirational women in the World. In 2018 she was made a Senior NIHR Investigator. Mary Jo Chesnel (PhD Researcher @Queen’s University Belfast) Mary Jo Chesnel is a PhD candidate in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University Belfast. Her qualitative research into breastfeeding support practice stems from experience as a clinical midwife and as a post-registration midwifery teacher. She commenced her DfE funded PhD in 2019 following completion of an MSc (Maternal and Child Health) where literature on midwifery language during breastfeeding support was reviewed. The focus of the doctoral study is breastfeeding support provision from the perspective of trained providers, and women's lived experience of being supported to breastfeed in Northern Ireland. Rachel Black (PhD Researcher @School of Nursing, Ulster University) Rachel is currently a PhD researcher within the Centre for Maternal, Fetal and Infant Research at Ulster University. She has a Master’s degree in Health Psychology and a BSc in Psychology. Her research interests include breastfeeding, maternal mental health, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy and research using social media. Her PhD focuses on developing an EMDR Therapy intervention for women who have experienced breastfeeding trauma. She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Co-Chair of BirthWise, a new maternity charity based in Northern Ireland and a trained breastfeeding peer supporter. Sharon Guille (PhD Researcher @Ulster University) Sharon Guille currently works as a PhD Researcher at the Institute of Nursing and Health Research, Ulster University. Adele Paton Adele Paton lives in Fermanagh with her husband and three sons. Adele is the founder of “Breastfeeding in Northern Ireland” a closed Facebook group with over 13,500 members. As a breastfeeding mother, Adele has been listening to mothers and providing voluntary breastfeeding support for over 15 years in her local community in Enniskillen. She is an International breastfeeding councillor with La Leche League and also works as a breastfeeding support worker with Cherish Surestart. Dr Mary Jane Brown (@NHS) Mary Jane is a registered dietitian currently working in the NHS. She has been involved in healthcare research for 14 years with a special interest in woman’s health. Mary Jane also works on a freelance basis writing evidence-based nutrition articles for the general public. She is passionate about coaching individuals and groups in improving their health through lifestyle change. She lives in Northern Ireland with her husband and three young daughters.
