Tracing Immigrants Through the Port of New York

This talk focuses on the records of the federal immigration service. The speaker will give a brief history of Ellis Island and the processing experience of immigrants and how that pertained to the collection of immigration lists and development of contemporary online databases. Topics such as passenger manifests, detainment, special inquiry, alien seamen, and other relevant sources, such as inspection, medical, and quarantine records, and substitutes for lost records will also be covered.
