Patricia Malarcher
Guest Editor & former SDA Journal Editor
Patricia Malarcher is an independent writer and studio artist. She served as Editor of the Surface Design Journal from 1993 through 2011.Starting in the mid-1970s, Malarcher has contributed articles and reviews to numerous periodicals, including American Craft, Fiberarts, Fiber Art Now, American Ceramics, and Metalsmith; she also contributed reviews and articles on crafts to regional sections of the (Sunday) New York Times. She has written chapters for books including Rooted, Revived, Reinvented: Basketry in America (Schiffer); Objects and Meaning (Scarecrow Press), and Helena Hernmarck: Tapestry Artist (Byggforlaget), and essays for exhibition catalogs. As a Renwick Fellow (1989), she researched published writings on craft from 1960 through 1990. The American Craft Council named her an Honorary fellow in 2020. She continues an active studio practice, creating wall pieces and artist books made from fabric, thread, plastic, paint, and mixed media and has had 21 solo exhibitions.
Jessica Hemmings
Jessica Hemmings is Professor of Craft at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. She is Visiting Professor with the Doctoral School of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, Hungary and the Rita Bolland Fellow at the Research Centre for Material Culture, the Netherlands (2020–2023). Recent publications include the second edition of The Textile Reader (Bloomsbury: 2023) and a forthcoming monograph about the Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen (V-A-C and ArtEZ: 2023).
Elizabeth Kozlowski
Editor, SDA Journal
Combining her passion for textiles and contemporary scholarship, Elizabeth Kozlowski is now serving her sixth year as Editor for the quarterly journal, Surface Design. Kozlowski has a M.A. with Honors in Museum Anthropology from Arizona State University and a B.F.A. in studio art, ceramics from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton. She has been awarded numerous curatorial residencies and travel grants including the 2019 Creative New Zealand Cultural Exchange Grant; the 2017 Windgate ITE Scholar-in-Residence at the Center for Art and Wood, Philadelphia; and the Danish Arts Foundation International Research Grant in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Kozlowski lives in the Blue Ridge mountains of Georgia with her partner and two cats Neruda and Cleopatra.
