Inflammation and Immune Health in Dairy Cattle and Sheep During the Peri-parturient Period
Systemic inflammation is known to be necessary for the parturition process. However, excessive or chronic inflammation during this period may impair the immune health of the animals and expose the animals to increased risk of infectious diseases. A better understanding on the relation between inflammation and immunity is critical for designing and developing new management and treatment strategies to improve the overall health of the animals.

In this webinar, Dr. Adrian Barragan from the Pennsylvania State University will present recent research from his lab describing physiological challenges of dairy cattle during the peripartum period and applied management practices that may be beneficial at modulating inflammation during this period. In a second talk, Dr. Massimo Bionaz/Mr. Hunter Ford from Oregon State University will discuss their recent study on ewes during the lambing period. This study found a negative correlation between ewes’ immunity and inflammation biomarkers. The two studies presented in this webinar suggest that controlling the inflammation level is beneficial for maintaining a good immune health in animals during the periparturient period.
