All-electric homes are becoming more and more common in California. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are also becoming a common way to house people in California. Establishing the owner’s project requirements and associated performance targets and metrics allows comparative evaluation of different design strategies and options. It also generates the data used in reporting for the 2030 Commitment. A simple illustration is the all-electric ADU showcased in this program.
In this program owner Nick Brown and architect Tim Kohut, AIA describe a new 1-bedroom all-electric ADU built above an existing garage in Long Beach. They will review the project from concept to completion, including reporting to the 2030 Commitment DDx. The project has all-electric systems, heat pump HV/AC, heat pump water heaters, induction ranges, electric washer, and heat pump clothes dryer. Also incorporated is a Heat Recovery Ventilator and a 12-panel PV system. The ADU was tested to Passivhaus airtightness standards for the building envelope.
